- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2015Sometime ago I decided the collection of my cookbooks had become way to big and that I would not buy any new ones and in case I did have a sudden urge of checking out a new one I would visit my local library, and should I find an interesting receipe I would just copy it down into my receipe notebook. This had worked pretty well for over a year, until I laid my hands on the last Rachel Khoo's book... Had to renew it three times, and when I eventually wanted to copy some of the receipes before giving it back, I realised that it would have to be probably a third of of the book at least... and that (taking into consdieration as well the reduced price) it was clearly much easier to get simply a copy of the book.
When it comes to the receipes directly, I must say I probably like the book more that e.g. the My little French kitchen book. My favourite of the Notebook's probably the starter section, though as well many of the mains are really nice and deserts as well (the trick with the chocolate cups for a fancy blackforest cake re-invention is just great!).
The receipes are easy to follow, and the book has (as all Rachel Khoo's books) a very cute graphic layout. I would say given the variety of the receipes anyone will find "several somethings" to their liking in it, even those who are not very confident in the kitchen. And, considering the reduced price (a real bargain at 7.99 pounds!) it's a real treat for any amateur cook who's looking for some new ideas to put into practice!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2015I much prefer this format (and book) to The Little Paris Kitchen because it really is 'notebook style', full of lovely photographs and jottings which makes it very easy to flick through (not one of those cookbooks that will sit on your coffee table or shelf for months, unread).
The recipes are very easily understandable because Rachel writes the same way as she talks: even a novice cook or baker could follow them because some are short (four or five little paragraphs), others are slightly longer but take your time and you'll get fab results.
The star of the show has to be the Pistachio & Pomegranate Cake on Page 163 - it's easy to make and spectacular, no other way to put it. I love anything with pistachios in it and you can leave off the pomegranate if you're not a fan. It's gooey, crumbly, flavoursome and lasted about 15 seconds in my house but that just gave me the excuse to make another one. Several friends have asked me to make one for them, which is always the sign of a good cake!
I'm an avid cookbook reader and collector/baker and this is one of those tomes that you just browse through and think: "Ooooh, I think I'll try that" and when you next have time, off you go.
Do try this book. You won't regret it for a second.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2016I've enjoyed Rachel's flavoursome and approachable food in her various TV series and was looking forward to cooking from this. Not as many recipes as I expected screamed 'cook me' at first glance but those I tried were lovely with some great twists.
The choc cherry cookies are amazing, the use of tinned cherries makes them taste much more grown-up than glace cherries and the fact the can be frozen and cooked from the freezer means I now always have them on standby.
The duck ragu is rich and comforting and I really enjoyed the twist of serving with savoury porridge wedges - a good riff on polenta. Even if a bit rich with the ragu it is something to take and use with other dishes - the mark of a good cookbook.
Other recipes I've tried, including the salt beef, were good too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2015Just got this book and as yet haven't tried any recipes from it. However if it is as good as her other two books they will be good. This book
is in the form of a notebook and is so colourful it raises the sprit immediately. The recipes look inviting and demand that you make them--she also makes them easy to do,. telling you how many the recipe is for, what ingredients and how to prepare them. Useful tips are also given which some may not just spring to mind at the time, but which you may be grateful for. It also has a fabric bookmark attatched which a lot of books don't have.
So anyone pondering whether or not to but this book, do. Even if you don't cook very often or at all for that matter, the colour photos and rachels sketches will keep you entertained.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 March 2015This book is like no other in my 'library' of cookbooks. Definitely a sit down, fun to read and beautiful to look through. Very appropriate name as it looks like a personal accounting of her travels. New twists on some old favorites and innovative look at new foods as well. Highly recommend this book for any foodie enthusiast. I now have all of Rachel's books. Thank you Rachel for all your hard work in putting together this book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2015I think that this is a beautifully presented book, full of recipes that look manageable for a reasonably competent home cook. I have several of Rachel's other books, and have always been delighted with both the books themselves and the food that can be produced from the ideas presented. I'm sure this one will be no exception. I've bought a second copy just now for a gift.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2016This was bought just because of the author. It has turned out to be an incredible useful cookbook. Recipes using few ingredients and turning into some tasty dishes. I love the way Rachel gets straight in and no messing about. This book is a pure delight. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book
I LOVE this book!!! For starters, it is the prettiest cookbook I have ever seen - so beautifully laid out. The pictures are amazing and it really is like a notebook. And the recipes are the best. I LOVE the shepherdless pie, sticky chicken, and soft steamed buns. All of Rachel's books are great though!

5.0 out of 5 stars kochen, kochen, kochen

5.0 out of 5 stars Es un gran libro de cocina
