Enid Blyton is one of the most popular children's authors of all time. Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author.

Enid Blyton adored writing for children. She wrote over 700 books and about 2,000 short stories. The Famous Five books, now 75 years old, are her most popular. She is also the author of other favourites including The Secret Seven, The Magic Faraway Tree, Malory Towers and Noddy.

Born in London in 1897, Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and loved dogs, gardening and the countryside. She was very knowledgeable about trees, flowers, birds and animals. Dorset - where some of the Famous Five's adventures are set - was a favourite place of hers too.

Enid Blyton's stories are read and loved by millions of children (and grown-ups) all over the world. Visit enidblyton.co.uk to discover more.

Brilliant Book!
Arrived within 48 hours, delivered by Amazon.Firstly, I understand that names have been changed and many aren't very happy with the changes, but from what I've read so far doesn't change anything abouy the plot of the storyline."Jo" has been changed to "Joe" also Bessie was changed to "Beth" and "Fanny" changed to "Frannie" and think its been done may be due to political correctness etc, I'm by no means part of a PC brigade and prefer the old-school however not alot has been changed and still a fantastic book. The plotline involves three children Joe, Beth and Frannie, and they move to a new home, next to an Enchanted Wood, and discover a Faraway Tree that has many different lands to visit, e.g. The roundabout land. This was a story read to me by my older sister as a child and my 8 year old daughter has been enjoying stories at night, so thought this would be a treat.

Read this as a child, and now re-reading it in my 60s. Very enjoyable! Nice to meet up with old friends…

I have fond memories of reading this book when I was younger. I don’t remember any specifics just how exciting they used to be. I remember there being a tree, obviously and I had a vague memory of some kind of market at the top of it. My husband had read them too, and he said he remembers them being a little frightening as they were always finding themselves in dangerous situations.
So, I was excited to add this to this year’s reading challenge for a book known as a classic. It was the perfect opportunity to revisit this world and see if it had weathered the times.
I was a little trepidatious, thinking it might seem too young for me or might even ruin the memories I had of the book. However, I can honestly say I enjoyed reading this so much. It has undoubtedly remained readable and enjoyable. It didn’t seem too simplistic, and I felt utterly engaged with the characters and their adventures regardless of their ages.
As my husband remembered, there were some really hairy moments where if I’d been a child reading this, I might have been quite scared. There was lots of apprehension, a few dodgy characters and some seemingly impossible situations. However, the children and the inhabitants of the Faraway Tree always manage to come good. The solutions they find do seem very implausible but were lighthearted and enjoyable to read.
I’m so glad I revisited this work, and I am tempted to read the other three books in the series when I get a chance. This really has won against the test of time, and I will be recommending it to my nieces in a few years as I think they will absolutely love the books too!

I fondly remembered the Faraway Tree books by Enid Blyton from my childhood. Despite the re-naming of characters in the modern edition to spare parents' blushes (ie Fanny becomes Frannie) these books are timeless and fantastic. My husband also enjoys reading them to our daughter despite him having not read them as a child. The quirky storylines are engaging and interesting. My daughter is only 3 and we thought she was too young to have these stories read to her but we were wrong. We now read a chapter a night (and sometimes one in the morning too!) The chapters are just the right length and are a small story in themselves about the magical lands the children visit at the top of the Faraway Tree. I like to think my daughter will treasure these books and be reading the stories to her own children one day. If you want to leave your children with a love of magical, wonderful stories, this series is a great place to start. The only reason I have rated this edition 4/5 is because my daughter would have liked more pictures and sometimes the artist has got details wrong which we all notice, like the colour of Silky's hair in the book is said to be golden, but he draws it as being black which doesn't bother me but really bothers my daughter which is quite funny. Yes its a tiny detail, but a more picture-rich book would be even more popular. I also think this series would work great as a kid's film.

I must confess that growing up I'd never heard of Enid Blyton's work, but a friend of mine recommended this book to me when I was looking for a gift for my five-year-old nephew. I bought a copy and got to read a few chapters in to see what it was like before I needed to send it away to him; I was very pleased with the little pictures and with the lovely imaginative style of the writing, with plenty of little names and details of the sort that kids love. I've since received a report from my sister that they've finished reading the book and as soon as they were done my nephew requested that they read it again right away - he loves it! From a parent's perspective, my sister says that she likes reading the book to him because each chapter is about the same length and contains its own little story, which means that when she promises "We'll read one chapter," she knows just how long it will take.

I am really enjoying reading this book with my children (7 and 5). I was worried they wouldn’t be interested in the stories but they were immediately captured by the world of the enchanted forest and the folk of the faraway tree, just as I was at their age. We are going through the whole series, one chapter each evening at bedtime.
