I have a LOT of books on health and nutrition but this is by far the best. I have been using it for 15 years and have had several copies after offering them to others along my incredible healing journey. If you wish to learn more about all aspects of digestion and how to combine foods for optimum nutrition and a treatment of a broad spectrum of health ailments I whole heartedly recommend buying this book. A lot of the Asian approach to healing is also explained, and I recommend combining seeing a qualified 5 element acupuncturist with the application of this information, especially if you are tackling a chronic health condition. This book is illuminating, a ray of hope if you have drawn dead ends on conventional health practitioner's treatments and applicable to both beginners and those with an already broad base of knowledge. Purchase yourself a cheap set of stainless steel cups on ebay as the last 200 or so pages are an explanation of each foods properties and recipes of how to prepare them, and they are all with the american measurement system of cups.
If you find the size of this book daunting, be assured that it has an excellent index, and can be used for reference very painlessly. Once you discover the wealth of information within it's the beginning of a voyage of discovery. Massive respect to the author Paul Pitchford.

This weighty tome is no less than a revelation.

Well researched and supported, the author argues with great persuasiveness and wisdom for the advantages of opting for a whole food diet. His care and conviction shine through in the text, which is written in a very readable and sincere style.

Along with a huge quantity of information on foods and herbs, there is much attention paid to problems with modern nutrition such as genetic modification, and the value of taking a moral, mindful and harmonious approach to diet and lifestyle choices.

In particular, the summary on a Sattvic lifestyle is potentially life-changing and thoroughly life-affirming.

This is a book that is very hard to put down once opened and contains treasures of wisdom on virtually every page. Very highly recommended.

This book is amazing in every sense of the word! Very well written and very well presented, you see a lot of work was put into it. This is a recommended book by the University of Westminster-London. It was already adopted by students of nutrition and this is how I got to read it for the first time. A MUST have for anyone interest in human nutrition as well and students of naturopathy, Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine or Yoga as the author makes the link between traditional medicines and science. With tons of easy to cook recipes at the end and all you need to change your lifestyle to a healthy one, this is definitely the Best book written on the subject. I love it!

I first bought this book a long time ago for myself. I liked it so much that I bought another one for my sister and yet another one for my brother. This is testament to how good and useful a book a believe it to be.
It contains a wealth of knowledge about the nutrition available from most wholefoods. It is certainly based on oriental systems with its frequent references to yin and yang and excess and deficiency, heat and cold, balance etc.
Anyone familiar with TCM will be at home with this book...and if not, thenanyone would also find it interesting and informative.
It also contains some healthy recipes.
I have referred to this book frequently.

I had a gum fistula (a tiny tube which carries infection from the root of a tooth to the gum) and had the option of root canal treatment or extraction. Having read up on bacterial infections in this book I opted for extraction. I had to go on a waiting list and, in the interm, followed the advice in this book and used oregano oil as a natural antibiotic. This is an enormous book, one to dip into rather than read from cover to cover. If you are considering having a root canal but don't want to buy the book just Google `Weston Price' - he's the dentist who discovered the pitfalls of root canal.

A very substantial book which i read from cover to cover. Apparently it is a set text for many naturopathic courses and one teacher told me it is rarely read! I a) understood for the first time what Eastern practitioners were talking about and b) got some great ideas which I hadn't heard elsewhere. Highly recommend - but not light reading.

This book has been a constant companion for many years, and has been instrumental in healing friends and family in the most subtle and beautiful ways. A reference book of great importance, and with no one method of healing it presents a truly holistic way of looking at health and food. Having owned a copy for many years, I still buy copies for friends and family as gifts when the time seems right and I know they will benefit from the wealth of information contained within. Since finding out I had a brain tumour I've bought many books on the subject of diet and health but none have surpassed this. In both it's approach and content. The first by laying out things clearly and the content for it's ability to explain complex points to the lay man. My only criticism if I could had one would be it gives almost too much information making it a very large and daunting tome!

I have many books on healing foods, herbs and modalities. This is above and beyond all of them. It is a serious text book in size and content, yet easy to follow and understand. It was immediately helpful to me in correcting my dietary choices to improve my overall well-being. It dispels confusion about foods promoted by various sources.

This book should be used at schools as a learning material. It covers everything. I love how it shifts and includes the energies and even meditation to food. A different perspective that makes complete sense. It explains oils, sugars, how our bodies are naturally connected to nature, what we recognise and what not and how illness is created. Just wow
