For those who would like to understand more about brass bands the DVD Brassed Off would in my opinion be a good start. A very moving film which I believe helps to understand part of our social history and at the same time great music.

All the usual suspects are there: Black Dyke Mills, Grimethorpe Colliery, Williams Fairey, Wingates and Brighouse and Rastrick, but there were others who I had not come across before (not being an expert in this field).I thoroughly enjoyed the CD and would recommend it.

    例えば普通のオーケストラ曲の場合、楽団名のみ書かれて指揮者名の表示も録音年の記載もないCDを、まともな値段で買う人がいるとは、とても思われない。しかし、このBrass BandのCD BOXセットは、まさにそれである。律儀にも、各楽曲の作曲者・編曲者名や出版社名はちゃんと表示されているが、あとは、各楽曲のタイトルとその演奏バンド名だけ。指揮者名も、録音年も、録音場所も、各曲の演奏時間の長さも、各CDに付いているライナー等のどこを見回しても、これらの情報は、全く見当たらない。曲中、特定の楽器（コルネット、トロンボーン、ユーフォニアム等）のソロがあるものも多いが、そのソリスト名の表示もないので、各楽曲の録音年代も、漠然と想像するくらいしかできない（収録曲に含まれる映画音楽の、その映画公開の年などから）。たぶん、1960年代かそこらの録音が主体なのだろうが。
    以上が、４CDで延々100曲も続く（CD1:79分11秒、CD2:64分38秒、CD3:79分44秒、CD4:79分7秒。計302分40秒）。これでは、よほどの好事家か、売値がよほど格安（今は円高ポンド安なので、現地価格はめちゃ安）でなければ、日本ではまともに売れない商品であろう。日本では、Brass Bandはeasy listeningの範疇ではなく、「クラシック」と考えられているから、なおさらである。

    各曲の演奏自体は、きわめて「まとも」であるだけに、商品企画に難がある、と言わざるを得ないのが惜しい。Re-issue版が出るのであれば（出そうにないが）、この点を是非改善してほしいものである。なお、曲は、演奏バンドごとにまとめて収録されているので、特定のバンドの録音だけ抜き出して聴くのに便利な編集、ではある。
