Product description

2009 sophomore album from the British Folk/Pop outfit. The First Days Of Spring is released to coincide with their film of the same name. The album was recorded in London and New York with producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons). The film, meanwhile, was shot on location in London and Surrey, with Charlie, who has in the past shot promo videos for his band, in the director's chair. The film has an ensemble cast which includes the model Daisy Lowe, and was given its first public airing in a special presentation at Latitude Festival this July. Features the single 'Blue Skies'. Mercury.

I recieved this album as a Christmas present and after listening to it I was honestly speachless. Every single song on this album is beautiful, made to absoloute perfection. It was just the most wonderful combination of sadness and joy, with beautiful lyrics and breath taking music, so gentle and delicate. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is thinking of buying it. I will guarantee you will be left speachless after hearing it. It has just the right balance of calm and sadness without making it dreary. Five stars all the way.

Imagine a world where Coldplay delivered on their early promise, where, instead of becoming the new Genesis and prancing around in very strange clothes indeed, they produced albums of ever increasing intensity and beauty. Well this is pretty much what we have here, only it's not by Coldplay. Over and out.

I bought this on the back of the group doing a session on Stuart and Mark's evening show on R2 that I really enjoyed. I am really enjoyng this album as well. It certainly isn't going to be for everyone - I would have hated it when I was 19 - but if you have gone beyond just wanting to jump and down to records and enjoy bathing in sounds then you will probably like this. The group do seem to have absorbed a lot of influences and have certainly listened to one too many Sigur Ros albums, but that is no bad thing. The tunes are warm and cuddly and the orchestral departures really rather mature and engaging.

    Genuis? No.

A very good pop record? Certainly.

After really enjoying the (ever so slightly twee) Peaceful the World Lays Me Down, I purchased The First Days of Spring with an air of expectancy. I was really hoping that the band would continue to harness their folk roots and youthful enthusiasm to build on the obvious promise of their debut offering. However, as much I have tried to like this album I have been left a little disappointed. Noah and the Whale seem very much like a band that has lost the joy of making music together. The mood of the majority of the album is sombre and melancholic and seems to dwell almost entirely on the break-up of lead singer Charlie Fink and former band mate Laura Marling. It is almost as if this were a set of songs written exclusively for her ears and lacks the playfulness and ability to connect with an audience that its predecessor had. There are some high spots, like the change of pace injected by the delightful `Love of an Orchestra', and the slight (but not entirely convincing) optimism of `Blue Skies'. Largely though this is an album that seems devoid of the spark that have made contemporaries such as The Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes and even Laura Marling herself so endearing.

I will now leave the CD in my car stereo for a couple of days to see if it turns out to be a grower. I don't hold out much hope though and am pretty sure it will be on a dusty shelf somewhere long before the first days of summer roll around.

Very gentle but still full of good music for those rare quiet moments. Thoughtful and well worth a very careful listen.

This is great, full of surprises. Nice to listen to with headphones on to chill out to. My Broken Heart is a classic track.

2.0 out of 5 stars il peggior cd dei noah and the whale

Come sempre ottimo zoverstock! Cd come nuovi ma a prezzi strepitosi. Purtroppo i brani del cd sono molto inferiori alle aspettative, direi il peggior cd del gruppo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dramatic, Cathartic, Achingly Beautiful
Reviewed in the United States on 3 November 2009
I heard this first at [...]. I cannot hope to review it as poetically as the reviewer there did, but I'll give it a shot.

This album is a soundtrack to heartache. The soaring strings soar upward in hope then at the peak become tinged with sadness and chords that border on chaos before resolving again. It must be listened to in its entirety, from start to finish. It tells a tale of breakup and all the phases of grief, denial and finally acceptance that go with it. The vocals are unabashed and sometimes feel flat against the lush and rich backdrop of the music, but the rawness somehow make the songs feel more genuine.

If you can admit that you sometimes like to indulge and wallow in your grief, there are few albums which indulge that feeling better.

Un peu surpris mais on retrouve bien le groupe. Chouette album et belle idée, même si elle n'est pas originale, d'ajouter davantage de cordes pour accompagner leurs morceaux.
