The Hypnobirthing Book + Hypnobirthing Relaxation CD Paperback
Complete Antenatal Training Programme
The Hypnobirthing Book is a complete antenatal preparation which guides you to achieve the birth you want.
Childbirth can be an empowering and positive experience that you treasure for the rest of your life. Hypnobirthing teaches simple and gentle techniques that have a profound effect.
By practising these techniques during pregnancy, you can release fear and anxiety, and build confidence in yourself and your body's ability to give birth naturally. Feeling calm and confident during labour helps your body to work efficiently, releasing endorphins, your body's natural anaesthetic.
Hypnobirthing can reduce the need for pain relief and shorten labour, and you are more likely to experience a natural, calm, comfortable birth. It actively involves the father; you will both learn skills to instill confidence about the birth and your role as parents.
KATHARINE GRAVES has personally taught over 1,000 mothers and her methods are taught internationally. She is a qualified advanced hypnotherapist and a qualified doula, having trained with Michel Odent, the internationally renowned obstretician. Katharine is a member of the International Advisory Board of the HypnoFertility Foundation of America, the Maternity and Newborn Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Association for the Improvement of Maternity Services, and an associate member of the Royal College of Midwives. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2015A really great book! Whether or not you take all the advice and hypnobirthing tips, it is still well worth the money for the excellent information provided regarding possible negative effects around routine caesareans and inductions of labour and alternative options for your labour that I wasn't aware of. The cd is wonderful to relax to and together the book and cd has helped me to feel relaxed, empowered and in control of my upcoming (any day now!) labour. It is easy to read, not too long and right to the point, it certainly promotes birthing without fear, it had changed my perspective of labour from a medical event to a natural one and I couldn't recommend it enough.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2013This book is excellent for all mums and dads. I have not done the course but the book gave me a good understanding of the whole process of labour. I have read several books and this is by far the best. It gives you a holistic approach to labour and birth as well as teaching you relaxation techniques which are simple to practice and use. This book has changed my outlook on labour and I feel a lot more confident to cope with any situation. It provides you with knowledge to enable you to make informed decisions on what you feel might be best for you. It also teaches you how you can adapt hypnobirthing to any labour situation weather it is straight forward or more complex. This is the book I will be taking to hospital to help me relax when the big day arrives!!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2014i chose to buy this book rather than attend a course as I am having twins and therefore felt that being more likely to have a caesarean it seemed a bit extravagant to attend a course. The book is very informative although will cover a lot of the same material as private antenatal classes will cover.
CD is good, I already have one CD and this was my second and I found it a great relaxation tool.
A great and far cheaper alternative to a course if you have already done an antenatal class but want to learn more techniques to try and stay calm during labour and visualisations aided by the CD.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2015Very interesting read. Some parts of the book are a bit fuzzy or from a certain perspective but overall it must have worked. Used every day from month 6 till birth which was a home pool birth, only a few hours over due date and went wonderfully smoothly and as expected. No drugs other than gas and air for the last 10 mins.
Scripts to read to yourself and to be read by a partner end up being a bit limited but we alternated and kept it going the full 3 months before birth. The book also came with a CD that had 2 relaxation scripts and positive affirmations to help you visualise a calm and successful birth. Great to listen to at night, on walks, when relaxing, etc.
Reading the book helped get in the right frame of mind and have a calm, natural birth.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2016Wish I have found this earlier on in my pregnancy...! Hypnobirthing is incredible! I got this when I was about 7/8 months pregnant, so didn't have much time to practice, but oh boy did it help! I had to be induced in the end, so although my labour was quick, it was intense! For anyone who hasn't been induced, they offer you an epidural before they induce you... All I had was gas and air towards the end, I breathed through all it and cannot tell you how much this helped. The midwives were amazed at how calm and quiet I was, not to mention the lack of drugs! Next pregnacy I will be practicing from the start and I hope next time will be even easier and maybe even pain free, almost!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2014This was my first hypnobirthing book I bought for my second child. There are some good sections on how your body reacts and works during labour and some good relaxations that go with the cd. There is more general stuff in it about nutrition and interventions which are the same info as many other books, which I didn't think was that relevant and could have been better replaced by more mantras or visualisation. Haven't used it in anger yet as not due till nov. have also bought maggie Howells cd which I'm yet to listen to.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2016I have been enjoying listening to the CD which was sent with the book. There are 2 meditation/visualisation exercises on the CD and some "birth affirmations". I have become very good at falling asleep to the visualisations and waking up as she is counting back to waking up, so I think they must be working. The author has a very "naturalistic" view of birthing, but goes through the different decisions you need to take into account for labour and just after the baby is born - take the author's advice and read up on the pros and cons of each decision. There is also information for your partner and their role which I think is useful.
There are other meditation/visualisations to do in the book which aren't on the CD, but they are supposed to be read to you by someone else, so I haven't done them yet. The book says you need to practise the visualisations so that they become second nature when you start labour, so you'll need to get the book early-ish and make sure you practise every day (or at least try to).
I haven't been through the labour process yet, so can't comment on how useful it is, but I feel more confident about the whole process as a result of reading the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 August 2016I don't agree with everything she says but a lot makes good sense and I will be using the relaxation visualizations and the breathing techniques to hopefully achieve an easier more natural birth. Not tried CD yet, a downloadable mp3 would have been better. Thought it would be a bit hippyish but wasn't too bad, a lot of it is about fostering positivity and reducing fear.i liked the info on the birth procedures as it was frank and honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource!
This was an excellent resource! I loved that this book included scripts - pro tip - I had my husband record himself reading all of the scripts so that I could “practise” hypnobirthing with my birthing partner without him having to read to me for an hour + every day. Worked perfectly. I wouldn’t say pain free, because I had back labour and a c section but it definitely helped me mentally prepare and set the room’s mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it.
Fantastic book that helps bring peace, love and an amazing energy into the beautiful experience of labour. I wish more people would open their hearts and minds to hypnobirthing and the amazing experience that can be had during labour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Helpful, Informative
Going into my pregnancy I didn’t know anything about hypnobirthing but I definitely heard the word all over the place. I looked it up one day and thought it sounded promising. I’m always up for anything all natural and I’m a pretty open minded person as well. I eventually decided on this book and really loved it ! I still have about 15 pages or so to go but I feel confident in saying how great it is. It’s very informative and I really like how she explains things. I’m not huge on the relaxation scenario things but I still think they can be helpful and I certainly like the idea behind them. I’ll probably be using the audio version of the relaxation things instead. Overall I think this is a good easy read too. I’m not a huge reader quite honestly but I got through this book pretty quickly. I also never wanted to put it down because I just wanted to keep reading lol. I don’t think you can go wrong with this book at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book, but I'm giving 4 stars because I didn't get a code with it to download the tracks so I had to contact the book company which was quite an inconvenience.
